How to NOT Get Scorched on Spring Break

How to NOT Get Scorched on Spring Break

Spring break is coming right up. Woohoo! We can all use a breather between winter and spring, even if it’s in the form of a relaxing weekend.

But for those of you heading somewhere warm, sunny, and fabulous over the holiday, you need a few must-haves. Bikini…check. Flip flops…of course. Anti-sunburn plan…huh?

I know, you have good intentions where monitoring your sun exposure is concerned. Don’t we all. But it’s tough to stay out from under the feel good rays of that glowing orb which we’ve barely laid eyes on since last September. Time to construct a plan to keep you from spending your entire trip nursing a nasty burn.

Your Anti-Sunburn Spring Break Plan

1 Choose the Right Sunscreen :: We know that mineral sunscreen is the best way to protect against UV damage. Even chemical sunscreen makers know that mineral is best, that’s why they add a bit of it to their toxic concoction so they can claim their products are mineral sunscreens. But we know the truth, and that is that you have to choose sunscreen that is free from chemical sunscreen ingredients and other junk.

Chemical sunscreen ingredients are not only less effective in preventing skin damage, but have the potential to cause free radical formation when worn in the sun, and have links to hormonal disruption and allergic reaction.

Check this guide for a mineral sunscreen to suit any sunny situation.

2 Use Sunscreen the Right Way :: Ok, here’s the hard part. You have to use your super effective sunscreen properly to get the benefits. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends applying at least one ounce (that’s about a palm full) to all exposed areas. Reapply every two hours or sooner if sunscreen has been rinsed off by sweat or water. Set a timer on your phone so you don’t forget. Time goes fast when you’re having fun.

3 About SPF :: While the number on your sunscreen is not the most important factor, it does matter. When protecting skin that hasn’t seen the light of day in a few months, you may think the higher the better, right? Or will a lower number deliver the same benefits for less time? Here is how to decipher those SPF numbers and choose which is right for you.

Fair skin tones — 10 minutes in sun before beginning to burn
Medium skin tones — 15 minutes in sun before beginning to burn
Dark skin tones — 20 minutes in sun before beginning to burn

The SPF number multiplied by the number of minutes it takes before you burn is the amount of protection you will get. For example, an SPF 20 product used on medium skin tone will offer 300 minutes of protection. 20 x 15 = 300.

Now, grab yourself a big hat and don’t be afraid to take a lunch break indoors to give skin a rest from UV exposure. And most of all, have a fabulous time!

Reconstructed InStyle BBB Sun Care

June is here! Yipeeee!!

We’ve been going over the InStyle Best Beauty Buys guide with a fine-toothed wooden bristle brush and subbing out those picks for some much healthier alternatives.

Now let’s get down to the stuff we are really thinking about right now … sunscreens and self tanners. If you’ve not yet considered protecting and/or giving your skin a little glow, now’s the time.

You know that mineral sunscreens provide the best protection against both UVA and UVB rays. And of course, you want products that are free from junk ingredients. Shrivel at the thought of those gloopy, neon white, grease slick mineral sunscreens?

What if I told you the days of enduring the grossness of mineral sunscreens are over? Well, that’s the truth. Formulators have figured out how to make mineral sunscreens that are not sticky or greasy, go on skin with no white film, and still provide that same effective protection you want. And I am going to fill you in on which are best, along with some pretty sweet all natural self tanners.

And away we go…

SUNSCREENS + SELF TANNERS

Self Tanner for Body   My all time top pick in this category has to be Lavera Sunless Tanner. I’ve used it for years and have found no other I like better. It goes on like a lotion, meaning it is lightly hydrating and easy to apply. It also provides a super natural looking tan with no orange tinge or streaks. And it smells great too. Another popular choice is Chocolate Sun Self Tanner. I have yet to try this one myself, but it is on my list.

Invisible Sunscreen for Face with Anti Aging   Suntegrity Sunscreen Face Protection SPF 30 leaves no greasiness or white film on skin, provides UVA and UVB protection, and doubles as a makeup primer. It also contains anti aging ingredients, green tea, algae, and pomegranate. Woot!

Overall Sunscreen for Body   Sticking with Suntegrity because it is just that awesome, Suntegrity Sunscreen for Body SPF 30 is your new go to. Easy to apply, feels like lotion, and has a light citrusy scent.

Facial Sunscreen   Surprise, surprise… Suntegrity 5-in-1 Tinted Sunscreen is my pick for those looking to protect the face and also add a bit of makeup coverage. Think of this as your summer BB Cream. SPF 30 provides more than adequate UV protection, this baby is packed with antioxidants to support skin and prevent premature aging. Comes in 5 shades.

Overall Sunscreen   Think: A sunscreen you can use on face, body, kids … the whole enchilada. True Natural Zinc 30 Baby & Family Sunscreen is the only one you’ll need in your beach bag this summer. Gentle, unscented, and non greasy. White factor?, you ask. This one requires a bit more rubbing in, but you definitely won’t be the ghost at the beach.

Self Tanner for Face   I love Lavera Organic Self Tanning Face Creamfor the same reasons I love the Lavera for body. Easy to use, doubles as moisturizer, looks super natural, and is not at all greasy. Apply every few days to maintain a natural glow. You’ll fall in love with this stuff.

Okey doke. We are by no means finished with the greening of the InStyle BBB. Still have body and hair products to go, so don’t forget to come on back now, ya’ hear?

Why It’s Important to Choose Mineral Sunscreen

Mineral Sunscreens

If there is one item I look forward to stocking up on each year, it’s sunscreen. Why? It means warmer weather is almost here!

Choosing the perfect sun protection, on the other hand, can be quite tricky. It has to be effective and safe, of course. I also have to like the look and feel of the product. If it is too greasy or white, not going to use it.

In an effort to find the best sunscreens, I have tried many. Some I pass on to those less selective about their protection, others keep on coming back. No matter your level of pickiness where sunscreen is concerned, make certain you are using broad spectrum protection.

What, exactly, is broad spectrum?

There are two kinds of UV rays that cause damage to skin. UVB rays damage top layers of skin, responsible for sunburn. UVA rays penetrate to deeper skin layers, causing potential long term damage, like wrinkles and skin cancer. Broad spectrum means the product provides protection against both type of rays.

Which sunscreens provide broad spectrum protection?

Mineral sunscreens all the way! This type of sun protection forms a physical barrier on the skin, preventing penetration of UV rays. Chemical sunscreens, on the other hand, work by absorbing into the skin. This, of course, allows those nasty UV rays to reach deeper layers.

Another advantage to going with mineral sunscreen, they work instantly. Chemical sunscreens recommend allowing 30 minutes post application to be effective.

Mineral sunscreens made with other natural ingredients are the safest and most effective means of UV protection for the whole family. Yes, mineral sunscreen can be white and greasy. Some of my favorite natural cosmetics brands have worked to solve these issues, and create very wearable and easy to use formulas. Check the following list for my favorite natural mineral sunscreen brands and stock up for spring/summer.

True Natural – This line includes several mineral options, including a convenient Sport Stick and two new formulas. My favorite is the Caribbean Coconut.

Purple Prairie Botanicals – I can’t get enough of the Sun Stick from this line, and love the Sun Stuff Lip Balm.

Suntegrity – Probably the most wearable mineral sunscreen I have tried. Not at all white or greasy, and the Tinted Face Sunscreen is fabulous.
